I can still remember clearly how my dad dragged me down the stairs of the shopping mall 20 years ago.I was crying (more to howling) like a crazy kid because I wanted the Superman action figure I saw in the mall. It’s not like my dad was cheap and cruel for not getting me the action figure,it’s because I already have too many at home! I was going to buy my 17th ‘Superman’ at that time. It’s totally understandable of a father who didn’t want his kid to get ‘drowned’ with his sea of toys in the room.
When I was kid,like any other boys, I love superheroes. We all like superheroes. Although I couldn’t remember what I did with them back then,as a young adult now,I learn a lot just by knowing the stories and background of each superhero.So dad,the toys you bought me,thats money well invested.
Let me share with you,what I learn in life from watching (and hours of playing the action figures) Superman,Batman and Spiderman.
Special abilities and weaknesses
Each hero have their special abilities and weaknesses. Although we say that super heroes are not real,but if you look closely,a super hero is not much different from an ordinary person. We too,have special abilities and also weaknesses like them (but let’s be clear that we CANNOT fly).
Take Superman for example. He knows his special ability is flying and he is super strong (he also likes to throw heavy things on enemies) but when it comes to his weaknesses, we thought its going to be a super nuclear bomb that is going to put him on his knees. But instead, it’s a harmless small crystal called ‘kryptonite’ that resembles the decorations on a Christmas tree. Who knew that would defeat the man of steel?
So even if you are someone powerful in the real world, or you have somethings that others don’t,remember that you will still have your weaknesses. Unlike Superman, you have to keep your feet on the ground.
Source of superpower
Where do the superheroes get their powers anyway? That’s up to the creativity of their creator of course. Some were born with it, some created super gadgets and some, just accidently got the power from a loose bio chemical radiated spider, like Peter Parker a.k.a Spiderman.
Just like any normal person, we can get lucky sometimes. We can get things that we don’t even ask for when somebody else prays everyday to have what we got. For instance, some of us are lucky enough to be born in a peaceful country, while some, heard gunshots couple of minutes after they came out from their mother’s womb.
So be thankful and embrace what has already been presented to you.
How will others react to your superpower?
When you have all the special ability or you are just plain special from others, people will either like you or hate you. Even if you are doing the most kindest things and sacrificed part of your life, there will be those who will offend you. Rappers like to call them ‘haters’.
In the case of Batman, Gotham citizens puts the blame on him for the chaos made by the crooks in the city. They didn’t care if he stays up late protecting the city from criminals, saving beautiful women who were trying to get somewhere through the dark,filthy back alley thought it was a ‘shortcut’.(What were they thinking?).
They don’t care about what he’s fighting for, they only want to put the blame on someone when they panicked. And who’s the better candidate other than the rich white boy who lives in a mansion far away from the chaos?
My point is, even if you are doing what you think is good for you or for others, there will be ‘haters’ and challenges along the way. Chin up and do what you have to do and prove everyone is wrong about you. Then, they will have nothing more to say.
Those 3 superheroes thought me these lessons. And thanks to my dad, who stopped me from opening my own toy museum, also thought me a valuable lesson- Crying like mad for an action figure will not work against a determined father.
