New Year’s resolution?

Whats the number one question you’ll get when a new year is approaching? “What’s your New Year’s resolution?” I don’t know about you but sometimes I do get tired of the same old questions being asked to me over and over again. Although the questions annoyed me each year, I’m not denying that it is an important one. Much more important than your New Year celebration. I mean, whats the point of celebrating if you don’t know where are you heading next, right?

Before I got into my mind and started drafting what I want in the new coming year, I asked myself, what is ‘resolution’? What does it mean? It is the same as having a ‘wishlist’? I thought it’s about the same but when I looked up for the meaning, I’m quite surprised. Here’s why.

According to Wikipedia, New Year’s resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a lifestyle change that is interpreted as advantageous.

Read that again, slowly and understand the meaning, word by word. You’ll realize that it is more than just a simple ‘wishlist’.

Why do you have New Year’s resolution?

Is it because everyone else is having theirs you feel left out if you don’t have your own? Is it because you need to have one so that you’ll be prepared the next time somebody pops out the question?(so you don’t look bad). Or is it because you really have the need and will to turn the new coming year into a better year compared to the previous one? Whatever that motivates you to have or make your New Year’s resolution,I hope you clearly understand the power and effect it will have on you in that year. Provided that you truly stick to your resolution.

“The moment you make a decision, that’s when I believe your destiny is shaped”~Anthony Robbins

Did you laughed at your resolution?

Have you ever made a resolution and then laughed at it thinking “What was I thinking?” or “Yeah, like I’m going to accomplish that”. Does that happened to you before?

Keep it up. Thats a good sign.

How come? When you made a resolution that you think you think can’t actually achieve it, that tells that you really put some effort into making one. You let your mind roamed free creatively and thats good. Whether or not you actually do accomplish that is totally up to you. There’s nothing that you cannot do once you put your mind into it.

So don’t worry if your New Year’s resolution is to ‘date Paris Hilton’.Nothing is impossible.Oh in case that IS your resolution, you can follow her on her Twitter @parishilton . Shes one celeb that likes to share pictures on Twitter.Hey, who am talking about?

How to be proud of your New Year’s resolution? Make a good one.

A lot of times when people asked you, you would lie or fake another ’safe’ New Year’s resolution because you’re afraid that people might laughed at your wild crazy resolution or thinks that you’re too shallow for having a ‘normal’ resolution.

For me I just keep my head high and don’t give a damn what people think about my resolution. But if you can improve the way you make a resolution, you can be proud of it and in fact might want to share with others. Here are couple of pointers.

1. Get into details. Nothing wrong with having a general resolution like ‘I want to be a better person this year’ but if you put into details, that shows how focus and clear you really are with it. Plus, it helps you to get the better picture and motivate you along the way as well.

Example:

“I want to be a better football player this year.My goal is to score 30 goals this season.”

“I want to learn to communicate well with people since people thought I’m shy. I target on talking to a new person every single day.”

2. Make resolutions based on your past achievements. Why settled for good when you can be the best? Take what you do best now and make a resolution that you want to achieve more this year. At the same time, people will see how you still have the hunger in your field. I’m sure you’re going to be proud of that.

Example :

“I am the best runner in the state last year. I want to be the best in the country this year.”

3. Look at your failures and give it another try. Lets face it. Not all of us can accomplished every single thing that we stated in our previous resolution. So don’t abandon it because you think it’s a failure. Give it another try this year. Show how determined you are as a person.

4.Listen what others has to say. Sometimes to be a better person, is to be a better listener. If a friend recommends you to change a few things about yourself, habits or other stuffs, take note and put in your resolution. Show that you are open for criticism and people like someone who can take the blame change for better good.

5.Renew your previous resolution. So you accomplished your resolution last year. What’s next? Move on and leave it behind? Some resolution, need to be renewed. Especially when it involves human habits. Probably your resolution for 2009 is to lose weight and have a balanced diet. Come 2010, you make new resolution and you forgot that you need to keep up with that habit and you slack off. So renew you resolution every year be proud of what you been achieving every single year.

So go ahead, write your New Year’s resolution that you can be proud of. Share what you want to be or achieve this year in the comments section below.

And Happy New Year guys!
